‘Ilima at Leihano Senior Living Community

739 Leihano Street, Kapolei, Hawai‘i 96707

Completed

2015

Following development of the landscape master plan Belt Collins completed the landscape design and construction documentation for the area subdivision package. The design process required meeting with the Kapolei Design Review Board to review the project's landscape components and plant material, as well as designing for  use of reclaimed R-1 water in irrigation. The planting design utilizes native trees and shrubs, accented with adaptive shrubs and groundcover. Belt Collins civil engineers assisted with preparing the State Department of Health documentation needed for reclaimed irrigation water use.

Seeing the need for a senior living center in Honolulu’s second city of Kapolei, ‘Ilima at Leihano was developed as the first phase for which Belt Collins was selected to prepare the overall community landscape master plan. Belt Collins assisted the developers with designing a multi-phased, approximate 40-acre senior community and provided the landscape design for the initial phase of the independent and assisted living facility. The subsequent phases, to be developed on separate lots are intended for medical care and other facilities that will support the senior community and life-style.

The assisted senior living facility is designed with three separate courtyards which required separate and unique landscape treatments. A secured enclosed courtyard with a walking path is provided for memory care patients. This courtyard is landscaped with colorful foliage and flowering plants and highlighted with tropical palm trees and as well as selected flowering trees. The second courtyard is an exercise and activity courtyard with a small therapy pool as well as outdoor exercise area. The remaining courtyard is a garden landscape area with a small number of living units that have direct access to it.
