Hokua with its 248 units is noted to be the first true luxury condo in Honolulu when it was completed in 2006. With 40 floors, it occupies an approximate 3.5-acre site for which Belt Collins provided civil engineering services.

Belt Collins as the Owner’s civil engineer, worked with Benjamin Woo Architects to provide civil engineering design services for redevelopment of a low-rise office building complex site in Kaka‘ako. Hokua is a high-rise residential mixed-use tower with ground floor commercial spaces. A 6-story parking garage and loading dock area was integrated into the project to meet the public and residential parking requirements as well as the commercial delivery needs. Services provided during the planning phase of the project included a traffic study, flood elevation determination, shadow study, and providing engineering input for the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority approvals. Coordination was done with the City and County of Honolulu and several adjacent developments to ensure the traffic circulation to the parking garage was integrated with the planned regional roadway realignments.

During the design, coordination was undertaken with both the State Department of Transportation and City agencies, based on adjacent roadway ownership. Coordination with planned developments on adjacent properties was also required to minimize reconstruction of improvements in the affected right-of-way and inconvenience to tower residents and the general public.  Water, sewer, storm drain, and gas service connections to the building were designed along with improvements in the adjacent rights-of-way.

Processing of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit coverage for storm water discharges during construction of the project was provided, along with construction observation services.
